Find a Mantra for your Evolution
If you don’t have a mantra — a go-to phrase you repeat to yourself to help power through a tough moment — you may not be getting all you can out of your workouts. As anyone who has struggled to embrace the shake at the barre knows, your workout is as much a test of your mental strength as your physical strength. A mantra is a phrase that empowers you, and gives you something to say back to the voice in your head that tells you, “It’s just too hard.”
Of course, a big part of the Barre Evolution Method is respecting and listening to your body. That’s why we place so much emphasis on modification for injuries, working at your own level, and respecting that your body is different every day. Ignoring the signals our body sends us can lead to injury — something our method was specifically designed to overcome. The purpose of your empowering phrase is not to distract you from listening to your body, but to help quiet your mind so that you can begin to truly hear what it is saying.
Because very often, you will find your mind is telling you to give up, when your body is telling you it can do more. You may find yourself thinking, “What am I doing?” when your legs are shaking in chair. But take a deep breath, repeat your mantra, and then listen to what your body has to say. You may just surprise yourself when it answers, “I can go another inch lower.”
Below is a list of potential mantras, but don’t feel like you have to use on of these. Get creative! And if you come up with something that motivates you, leave it in the comments for us.
- Breathe through it.
- Every day I’m stronger.
- I can do this.
- One more inch.
- I’m doing this for me.
- One minute passes quickly.
- I am making progress.
- This is where I want to be.
- I am strong.
